As far as the acquisition of information is concerned, once the methodology has been clarified, all that remains is to transform it into a cultural phenomenon, starting to involve schools of all levels. If the motto "know to protect" is valid, it is necessary to teach to read the Cultural Heritage, in the same way as, for years, the school has ventured in an attempt to make "I Promessi sposi" read. Obviously the information should be channeled in the various sectors, in order to be continuously correct, updated and put on the net.
Before planning any operation aimed at acquiring information for GIS, it is necessary to reiterate the characteristics of the "means of transport" of the information itself, in our case the Internet. Let's start by reiterating that the Internet is a horizontal structure, this means that any idea of creating a central structure a priori, capable of ignoring competitive structures or even censoring them, must be dismissed. The Internet, created for military purposes, has precisely the characteristic of being immune from any attempt to censure communication. Therefore, a possible central structure could only have the task of coordinating the peripheral ones, accepting the risk of succumbing if their skills were insufficient.
Let's try to plan the operation. The first objective to be achieved is literacy: any collection of information would be useless if you are unable to communicate it. Elementary school can only be interested in this operation. It is simply a matter of digitizing postcards or photographs and providing them with enough text to identify them. Then it is to be hoped that the School will dedicate at least one discipline to the historical memory of the area, in which the student will have the opportunity to improve and complete the documentation, until the end of his studies.
In our case, having to identify a working method and, therefore, to create a demonstration frame, we will start the documentation of an urban center, in connection with a structure that already boasts an experience of documentation and analysis of the local reality, even if for the diffusion uses traditional means. As we have been able to verify through the students' works, the most difficult problem to overcome is not so much that of finding information, but rather that of divulging it with a new language, what is the "multimedia language".
Later, when we have an acceptable working methodology, we will try to connect with a school structure.
